Disability Rights New York (DRNY), the Protection and Advocacy System for New York State, is seeking experienced individuals with a passion for achieving justice for individuals with disabilities. DRNY challenges systemic abuse, neglect, discrimination, and legal rights violations through legal case-handling, individual and systemic reform litigation, public investigations, advocacy, and collaboration with stakeholders. Staff Attorney - Disability Rights (Albany)

The Staff Attorney in the PAIMI Program is an attorney for individuals with mental illness. The Staff Attorney will provide legal services and engage in individual and systemic representation and litigation. This position reports to the Program Director.

The Staff Attorney:

  • Provides individual and systemic legal representation to ensure protection of the rights of individuals with mental illness;
  • Analyzes existing cases as well as other matters to determine if they present systemic issues which may be appropriate for DRNY to address, and, with the Program Director, formulate strategies for their prevention, reduction or elimination;
  • Investigates allegations of abuse and neglect;
  • Monitors state and private facilities and service providers for abuse, neglect and compliance with federal and state laws;
  • Drafts investigative and monitoring reports;
  • Consults with professionals such as attorneys, physicians, psychologists, therapists, educators, and others to identify options and barriers for individuals and groups;
  • Assists individuals with disabilities in advocacy and systems change efforts including law reform litigation;
  • Supports DRNY projects and initiatives that foster self-advocacy, and coalition building;
  • Participates on task forces, coalitions, and committees, and conduct training and outreach activities.

Qualifications

  • Be a member in good standing of the New York State Bar or eligible to waive in from another jurisdiction, or be eligible to become a member within a reasonable time after beginning employment, and maintain such standing throughout employment with DRNY;
  • Demonstrated interest and commitment to civil rights or public interest law;

  • Excellent communication skills; and

  • Ability to work efficiently, independently and collaboratively as part of a team.

Preferred Skills

  • Public interest, civil rights, or disability law experience;
  • Experience working with diverse populations;
  • Litigation experience preferred;
  • Systemic litigation experience - in state and/or federal court;
  • Knowledge of the Protection & Advocacy system.

 

Working Conditions

A Staff Attorney usually performs work in an office environment, but the mission of the organization may sometimes take a Staff Attorney to non-standard workplaces. This position is based in Albany, NY.

A Staff Attorney will be expected to travel within and outside the state as necessary.

The Staff Attorney is a legal advocate for individuals with disabilities. The Staff Attorney will provide legal services and engage in individual and systemic advocacy on behalf of individuals with mental illness. This position reports to the Program Director.

Advocate - PAAT & PAVA

DRNY is currently recruiting to fill the position of Advocate in our Rochester NY office. The Advocate will provide legal services and engage in individual and systemic advocacy on behalf of individuals with disabilities and reports to the Director of the program.

The Advocate’s job duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide advocacy services to people with disabilities, including client interviews, identifying issues, determining a course of action, developing and implementing appropriate advocacy strategies, negotiating solutions to problems, and encouraging self-advocacy, when appropriate;
  • Consult with people with disabilities, family members, advocacy groups, and others to identify barriers for people with disabilities and identify strategies to address such barriers and issues;
  • Analyze new and existing cases as well as other matters to determine if they present systemic issues which may be appropriate for DRNY to address;
  • Keep informed on advocacy strategies, technology advances, and other best practices;
  • Be available to travel throughout New York State and outside of New York State as necessary to perform assigned job tasks.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant subject required, Masters preferred;
  • Intermediate experience and use of Microsoft Office Suite;
  • Ability to provide education and training to large groups;
  • Strong writing, organizational, and analytical skills;
  • Ability to independently travel and or drive to offsite locations within NY to facilitate monitoring visits, organization outreach, and or client advocacy needs on a routine basis; and
  • Valid Driver’s License
