The Maryland Office of People’s Counsel (MD OPC) is looking for an energetic, creative attorney with a strong interest in consumer advocacy to round out our team of talented and committed lawyers.
MD OPC, an independent State agency, is seeking applicants for an Assistant People’s Counsel position. MD OPC is a consumer protection agency that represents the interests of residential utility consumers in energy, telecommunications and other matters before the Maryland Public Service Commission (PSC), federal agencies and the appellate courts. An Assistant People’s Counsel may represent the agency in a variety of regulatory matters, including rate cases, merger applications, service reliability, energy procurement, energy efficiency and renewable energy, consumer protection issues and rulemaking proceedings. MD OPC also provides information and testimony on legislative matters that affect the interests of residential utility consumers.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate must have a minimum of two years of litigation experience and excellent analytical, writing and oral advocacy skills. Background in or familiarity with utility regulation, economics, engineering, accounting or consumer protection laws will enhance the application. Experience with energy efficiency, renewable energy or wholesale electricity markets also is a plus. Admission to the Maryland Bar and valid driver’s license are required. The candidate must be able to travel, including evenings and weekends, as required on an occasional basis.
